 Opportunist/Distraction Burglaries

There is a trend at the moment relating to opportunist/distraction thefts. They are currently targeting properties in the area – they have a liking for cash and jewellery.

The Tandragee community police have the following suggestions:

  • Do not keep large sums of cash in the house.
  • Keep jewellery out of sight and preferably locked in a safe. If you have very expensive jewellery consider depositing with your bank or a company that specialises in securing high value items.

In addition to this advice,

  • Also ensure that your jewellery is insured.
  • Photograph each item of jewellery and consider using Smart Water.
  • Make sure expensive items have been professionally valued and are insured under your home contents policy.

What To Look Out For:

  • People unexpectedly calling at your door and asking to come inside.

  • People who call at your door and keep talking or try selling you something even when you say you are not interested.

Before you answer the door ensure your back door is locked and windows are shut. DO NOT LET THEM INTO YOUR HOUSE. If you have a chain use it otherwise consider getting one fitted.

If you feel something just doesn’t feel right or suspicious please do the following:

Write down the vehicle registration number, the colour and make of the vehicle and any distinguishing features (phone number, mismatched colours or decorative features like stripes).

If you see a person acting suspiciously make a note of their approximate age, build, height, hair colour and the type of clothing they are wearing, plus any distinguishing features (tattoos or scars).

If they speak to you make a note of their accent (local, Southern Irish, English etc.).

Then call the police on 0845 600 8000 or if you believe it is a matter of urgency dial 999.
